Hi everyone!

A friend of mine is undergoing extensive chemotherapy right now and one of the many unpleasant side effects she is experiencing is bladder spasms/incontinence. Does anyone know of any good treatments or ways to relieve bladder spasms? She said they get much worse when she stands up and is just really uncomfortable all the time.

I’ve seen cornsilk and magnesium/calcium supplements suggested in several places as possible aids in relief, does anyone have any experience with using them to help bladder spasms? Any help I could pass along would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don’t really have any advice beyond checking with her oncologist before starting any supplements. Some things can have really nasty interactions with chemo drugs. Good luck to her, hope she feels much better soon!

Yeah, I definitely have told her to check with her docs about everything/anything. She is currently inpatient, so asking doens’t take that long. Thanks for the well wishes!

i’ve had bladder spasms since i was 17…so roughly 30 years worth. (yep, that BLOWS.)

yes, magnisium tends to help with muscle spasms of all sorts…i originally started it for leg cramps (viscious ones!!!) that woke me or prevented me from falling asleep. yes, its been a success. and thinking about it, yes its actually helped the bladder spasms, too.

it doesnt HURT as much, and its easier to empty my bladder, too.

You might see if she can get a script for Pyridium. It’s that fun stuff they give you when you have a UTI, turns your pee briiiiiiight orange/yellow. It works like a local/topicalish analgesic for your urinary tract, including bladder, so that might help. It also comes OTC as Azo — but to repeat, check for interactions before starting.

Medically speaking, I’ve seen oxybutynin prescribed for bladder spasms post-surgery. Perhaps something worth looking into?
