I know I comment on UTI posts all the time, I know I post them frequently. I know you’re going to tell me to go to the doc, or at the very least do watchful waiting. But I have anxiety about basically everything, and would really appreciate some soothing words.

I have a 22 mo Mirena IUD, and over the last few months have noticed nearly biweekly cramping, as if I get ovulation AND period cramps. They’re pretty intense, to the point that I do take cramp bark or ibuprofen all day in order to get rid of them for the day or so they’re present.

I’m afraid my cramps and peeing mean a UTI rather than IUD and drinking lots of water:
1. The cramps aren’t alleviated by cramp bark, only ibuprofen, even though the pain is right about where my menstrual cramps always are, not where my bladder pain tends to be located.
2. I pee every hour or so, and the last few times have been with only a few tablespoons of fluid.
3. I had PIV sex last night (entirely girl on top, which probably has more grinding than usual).
4. I didn’t go pee immediately after sex, but I’m pretty sure I went within 10 minutes. I also rinsed off my vulva with sodden TP and took my usual cranberry and mannose-d pills.

There is no pain when I pee, or afterwards. No spasming, sense of urgency, or even a yeast infection burning sensation. I am feeling nauseous, but that could be because I’ve had lots of Easter candy and only had a grilled cheese sandwich for dinner.

I’m going to keep drinking water, take a few more cranberry pills, and take some uva ursi drops. Do you think I should start figuring out how to get myself to a minute clinic tomorrow? (I have a rare window during work, but no car.) I’m at the point where I’m noticing every twinge of a sore back, every nerve ending in my abdomen and going OH GOD KIDNEYS.

Sidenote: I wish there existed a smartphone app that monitored the shaking of your bed (like the SleepCycle alarm clock) and then alerted you some user-set window afterwards. You know, waiting for the bed to stop rocking and then remind you to pee.

Ot, I would totally buy that app. I go to sleep right after sex usually, I can help it!

On topic, I don’t have an iud… That said, I have a lot of UTIs, and mine don’t introduce pain, really; it’s all reduced output until it gets “ER time” bad, so it can present as just lowered output, ime. In your shoes, I’d probably try to get to the minute clinic.

Uggggh. I’ve never had a painless UTI, but I’ll see about getting to that minute clinic. (Luckily, I also get off work earlier tomorrow, and could go afterwards.)

I have a friend who does iPhone app programming, but don’t know how to pitch it to him other than how I did above. Ideas for a more tactful, SFW pitch?

  3. Etnous says:

I hope your visit went well.

(as for the app, not sure if serious… but in case you are!, maybe pitch it as a medical thing? percentage of vagina owners who experience UTIs after sex, percentage it is if they pee right after sex, and run from there?)

Since I got up around 3am in a panic about the possibility of a UTI, I decided to trust my instinct and act as if I had one. I didn’t get to a doc until 7:30 tonight, and my urine sample was clear. Because she agreed that my aggregation of symptoms, combined with my propensity to get UTIs, she just gave me 3 days of Cipro and sent the urine out to be cultured.

I bought a bottle of acidophilus tablets because argh.

On topic, I totally don’t have any advice to offer you. :/ I hope you feel better soon, though.

Almost completely off-topic:I’m mainly commenting to ask what cramp bark is, and if it is less harsh to use for cramp relief than ibuprofen? (since that’s the only thing that ever works for me.)

Cramp bark’s a plant. It’s basically a mild muscle relaxant. Works absolute wonders for me for menstrual cramps – I used to gather my own. 🙂 I used it in combination with valerian sometimes when muscle spasms were keeping me from sleeping.

Now that I have cycles and cramps again, I should really order some….

This is the info page from the site I use to order herbs.

Thanks for the link, I’m gonna look into that. ANYTHING to help with cramps!

Thankyou so much for the info! 😀

I hope you feel better soon! It’s good to go with your instincts, and I’ve totally had UTIs before that weren’t picked up right away by a urine sample initially, but were definitely one later. You know your body more than anyone else.

And yes. That app would be wonderful, ahahah
